Maria Mayhem sat in the driver seat if her beat up two thousand and one Nissan Maxima which idled in the driveway to Chris Madison's two story colonial home. Her eyes shifted back and forth between the mirror in her visor and through the windshield where Chris was standing with his back towards her while locking up the front door to his home.
She flipped the visor back up as Chris turned his body towards the car. After taking a few steps he shoved his keys into his back pocket and then quickly dug into his front right pocket. Maria lowered the passenger side window to yell out to Chris, "did you forget something?"
Chris pulled out his cellphone and looked down at the caller ID seeing that it was his manager, Frankie Morrison. He lifted his head before shouting back, "I have to take this. It's Frankie!"
She sulked as she slunk down in her seat. Annoyed by Frankie's continuously impeccable timing she roared a disparaging sigh. "Just hurry up, you have a flight to make!"
Chris raised his index finger while answering his phone and putting it on speakerphone. "What's up Frankie? You caught me as I was walking out the door..."
His voice cracked through the poor reception. "Change of..."
"Change of what? I can't hear you, you're breaking up", Madison responded while trying to decipher Frankie's message.
Another broken message was heard in between the gaps of static and then silence. "Cancelled...Seattle..."
Chris shook his head and looked down at his phone, confused. He hung up on Frankie and stuffed the phone back into his pocket before jumping into the passenger seat of Maria's car. "Everything okay", she asked while putting the car in reverse.
"I don't know...it was Frankie but I couldn't make out what he was saying. The reception was shit, like he was going through a tunnel or something", he explained while tugging on the seatbelt over his right shoulder.
"I'm sure if it was that important he'll call back." With impeccable timing, Madison's phone began to vibrate again. Maria nodded her head as if to say I told you so.
Chris once again answered the phone and put it on speakerphone. "Yeah Frankie, I hope the reception is better this time around."
"Sorry about that, I was just going through the Midtown Tunnel", he explained. "I don't know what bits you were able to hear before. There's been a slight change in plans. Did you leave yet?"
"Yeah Frankie, we just left..." Madison paused for a moment while signaling for Maria to pull over. "What's the big change in plans", Chris inquired, dreading the last minute change.
"It's not that big of a deal..." Frankie's poor attempt to reassure his client was met by a look of disgust by Chris. "You know how EWC is in shambles at the moment, with the King of the Cage starting this week, the loss of MadDawg, added with Mac's own personal problems, it's like a powder keg. Well Mac just reached out to everyone and officially the tournament is being pushed back a week..."
Chris took a deep sigh, frustrated because of all the work he put in this week. "So now what? The flights are all screwed up...did Mac mention an opponent for me?"
"Don't get yourself all worked up over stuff that's out of your control...everything is being taken care of as we speak. You'll be flying directly to Seattle for the PURE Wrestling event. I got you on an afternoon flight. As for the King of the Cage, MadDawg's death left his spot open and it's a bit of a sore subject. I don't see them taking a firm stance either way, so all you can do is prepare yourself for anything!" Frankie sensed the unsettling silence on the other end of the line and felt it was a good time to wish he client and close friend, good luck. "You just focus on Jair Hopkins and Aubrey J. Parker. They're legit competition but you can overcome them. You always seem to find a way."
"Easier said than done...but thanks for the vote of confidence", Madison expressed before hanging up the phone. He dropped the phone in one of the cup holders in the center console of the car.
"Still going to the airport" Maria asked while punching the car back into drive and continuing their trip.
"Yeah…" he muttered. Chris turned his head away from Maria and stared out the window, watching the scenery as it zoomed passed.
"Well that's kind of good news, no?" Maria tried her best to make conversation with her boyfriend as she drove, but he seemed more content looking at tree after tree. "All that preparation…you should be more than ready for your match with Parker and Hopkins…"
Madison grinned as he snapped his head towards Maria. "Yeah, but its going to be a full fifteen days since I last stepped in the ring. I wasn't looking to let any momentum I built be taken from because of a long layoff."
"I don't think the time off was necessarily a bad thing. You nearly destroyed yourself in that WarGames match. I understand that you'd do anything to win, but you could barely hold yourself up after going through a battle like that…" You could sense the sincere concern in her voice as she replied.
Madison chuckled to himself before turning his attention back to the passing maple trees. "I've been through worse. I'll go through worse. No one is forcing your hand here. I know it's got be stressful to see me like that but you need to realize that it won't always be that way. In this profession you go through ups and downs. Some wins come easier than others. Seattle is looking like a place where I can solidify myself as a top talent without having to kill myself week after week."
She tried to hide her comforting smile. "I'm relieved to hear that…"
"A win in my debut would put me towards the top of the food chain almost instantaneously. Hopkins and Parker should be smart enough to steer clear. Like Gates and Biggs learned, when I have my mind focused on a task, I'm damn near unbeatable!" Madison nodded his head as his own preaching made him comfortable with his new employment.

5:00 AM
The incoherent ramblings of Seattle partygoers who were just grabbing a bite to eat at a local diner before calling it a night acted as background noise to the few who sat at the counter, just beginning their days. The waitress who worked behind the counter peered over to the packed tables with daggers in her eyes in between filling some of the diners mugs with black sludge like coffee.
The front door swung open causing a tiny bell to ring. Chris Madison stepped in, wide awake. He looked over at the rambunctious and disgustingly slips his head backwards before letting out a deep sigh. The elderly waitress could see that Chris was visibly revolted by some of the clientele. "Good morning! Just one", she inquired while wiping a spot at the counter with a white dish rag. Madison nodded his head while approaching the waitress. "Have a seat here hun. Cup of coffee?"
Madison softly blurted "yeah" while he focused his attention to a scrum between drunks at one of the tables. A couple of large males swarm the table and grab the troubled guests, escorting them outside. "Is it always this lively in this place?"
The waitress placed a mug in front of Chris and began pouring the scalding hot, black liquid. "Only on the weekends. The owner hires his nephews to work as security. Some of these kids now a days just can't handle their alcohol."
Chris lifted the ivory colored cup to his lips and took a sip. "Hmmm", he muttered with a mouth full of feverous coffee.
"Good, huh?" She smiled while filling some of the surrounding foodies mugs.
Chris nodded his head while taking another sip. He placed the mug down and turned towards the front door as the bell rang once again. He watched as the two large men bragged to one another about their dominance over a couple of feeble lushes. The two men ducked their heads as they walked in and moved back over to a table which they sat at off to the side while watching the patrons.
"A couple of big boys…" Chris muttered loud enough for the waitress to hear.
The right corner of her mouth twitched upwards. "They only do this to help their uncle out, and it depends if they're available. They're trying to become professional wrestlers. Silly, I know…I told them boys to give that jazz up and get real jobs but they insist that they're going to make it big one day."
Madison nearly spat his coffee out as she bashed their dreams, unknowing of just who Chris was.
"I know, That was my reaction when they told me!" She handed Chris a stack of napkins along with a menu. "Just let me know if I can get you anything to eat."
Chris brushed at the bit of dribble that landed on his black v-neck t-shirt. He lifted his head and nearly fell off his stool when one of the men snuck up and sat next to him.
"So…Sorr…Sorry" he stuttered nervously as Chris tried to bury his face into the menu. "I didn't mean to startle you Mr. Madison!"
The waitress turned back around and looked on curiously as Madison and the young security guard interacted. "Jimmy, you know this gentlemen?"
"Uh, Yeah! It's Chris Madison…He's one of the wrestlers in town for the start of that new promotion I was telling you about", he informed while gazing at Chris starry-eyed.
She gently placed her hand over her gaping mouth. "I'm so sorry sir…"
"Why, what did you say to him!" Jimmy angrily asked.
Chris lifted his hands in the air, "It's okay…honestly! Everyone is entitled to their own opinions!"
Embarrassed by her comments, the waitress scurried away from Chris, going towards the other end of the counter. The young man was quick to try and grab Chris's ear. "My brother and I are trying to make it in the wrestling industry! We're just in between bookings right now. We've wrestled five shows so far!"
Madison's attention was on the menu in front of him as Jimmy carried on. Each word finding its way in one ear and right out the other. The only thought in his mind was french toast or pancakes but he replied to every break of Jimmy's with an "uh-huh".
Chris's attention was forced as the large man placed his hand down on his shoulder and patted a couple times, almost knocking Madison over the countertop. "Does a veteran like yourself have any key pointers for someone like me?"
Madison looked the large man over, sizing him up. "Size isn't everything kid! The business is ever changing. It's not rare to see a woman on top of a company now a days. If you truly want to make it, you need to adapt. You need to be able to change with the times. It's not like the old days when the biggest guy in the locker room was the top guy. Performance is everything! If you can't perform, you'll be unemployed!"
"Wow! Thanks for the advice!" He jumped up from the stool and zipped back to his brother. The two men whispered to one another like a couple of gossiping school girls.
The waitress slowly made her way back to Chris and was on the verge of another apology when Chris quickly cut her off. "I'll have an order of the chocolate chip pancakes!" He handed the menu over and smiled, easing any tension she may have felt.
"Let's rewind things back to October twenty seventh, One Night In Hell."
"It was a night which could have been seen as one of APW's greatest events. Instead, it turned out to be more of an eternal resting place for one of this industry's greatest companies. Instead of celebrating a change of an era, we're stuck memorializing the remnants of what was once the leader of professional wrestling."
"Perhaps the people weren't ready for change. Perhaps all of this was a blessing in disguise. In one night we saw Johnny Rebel supplant Level-One as the Heavyweight Champion, a title that no one saw changing hands except Johnny Rebel. We saw all remaining hope of Terry Marvin reclaiming what many thought was rightfully his, be smashed into oblivion when Jerry Matthews made a surprise appearance in the elimination chamber and eventually aided Ms. Aubrey J. Parker in defeating Sally Talfourd. Let's not forget the four heroes of APW, CJ Gates, Biggs, Jason Kash, and Reaver coming up short in their quest to put a stop to the Black Hand and I. Oh yeah, and the changing of guard in the tag team division as the Unforgiven finally dethroned the Dying Breed..."
"The whole axis which APW spun on was flipped around in one night...and the events which would have followed could have made for unprecedented wrestling."
"But we'll never know will we? We may never know just how the events of One Night in Hell would have played out…President Jeff had his own demons and locked out every single superstar that has ever bled for that company. Now hundreds of employees, wrestlers and staff alike were forced to find work elsewhere. Men and women who counted on those paychecks to get by are left wondering where their next break is going come from. Others are a bit more fortunate."
"There's no secret that I had my fair share of offers thrown my way. So what made me choose PURE wrestling? Match ups like this. Chris Madison versus Jair Hopkins versus Aubrey J. Parker."
"You slap that on the marquee and it's an instant sell out. A match that is pay per view caliber! Where else am I going to get that kind of competition? In Global Wrestling Entertainment? Hell no! Extreme Wrestling Corporation? Those guys can barely stand on their own feet? It took two of APW's most recognizable figures to come together and create a place where you can actually go to compete. A new company that is pure, and free from all of the underhanded tactics that come along with established companies. A place where everyone gets to start fresh. A place where you can be judged freely on your pure ability and not on your personal relationships. It's tough to be a new face in an established company. No matter how good you are, sometimes you just can't seem to get any momentum for your career. Now everyone starts from square one…And your career rests solely on your own shoulders…"
"With that being said, I find myself against two of the final champions in APW. Aubrey J. Parker was the final Undisputed Champion and Jair Hopkins was the final Tap Out Champion. Given our pasts, just over two weeks ago this match seemed highly unlikely with both of you being on Asylum and me being on Overdrive. But thanks to a strange turn in events here we are…"
"Jair Hopkins, I'm glad that you and Bailey found your way over to PURE wrestling. There are a lot of names on my APW bucket list that I'll probably never get to stand across from inside a ring. With the Dying Breed signing here, I can still scratch a couple of names off that list!"
"You two were the face of tag team wrestling. Together, a presence almost as fearsome as Terry Marvin or Level-One. That alone is an accomplishment in itself that you guys should be proud of. But don't mistake the respect I have for you as weakness. I'm no slouch myself! In my short time in APW I cemented myself as a major player on Overdrive. "Then we have the princess of the wrestling world, Aubrey J. Parker."
"A lot of people see you and they're immediately turned off. They see the snobby girl who has had the world handed to her. "I'm not the kind of guy to overlook anyone. At five foot six and one hundred and thirty five pounds, you're far from an imposing figure. But there is something about you that just refuses to lose. That's what I admire about you! You're willing to do whatever it takes to get a victory, even if it means adding to that growing number of haters out there. Not everyone is so able to remain so unaffected by others opinions…its one of the reasons you were able to overcome the Terry Marvin mountain. Something as simple as winning by any means necessary…Not everyone can feel comfortable with themselves knowing that their wins can be viewed as tainted."
"But not everyone is championship material…"
"This match may just give an insight on who the frontrunner for the PURE Heavyweight Championship is…"
