I've never been great at this. I've never been "elite". I'm just a cog in the machine. Just a soldier on the front line. I've always been content to stand back and let others bask in the glory that comes from greatness.
Bu, every once in a while. Every once in a while that all changes. Every once ina while the fire flares up and the desire for more shows it's ugly face.
This is one of those times.
I'm new here. I'm out of my comfort zone. I'm surrounded by a bunch of people that I don't know. A lot of these kids I've heard of, but haven't had the pleasure to work with. I guess in old age I've gotten more stubborn. I don't like change, and this is almost too big of one.
I know in this situation, some wouldn't blame me if I shrank back and just continued on my merry way. They wouldn't blame me if I just kept chugging away. Spinning around and around, that little Cog in the Machine. They wouldn't blame me if I just accepted my place and stood in the back of the line.
Because that's what I've always done in the past. I've accepted mediocrity. I've stood aside as I've let others stand tall at the top.
Not.
This.
Time.
"But, there's five people......"
[APB looks at the beleaguered staff member in confusion.]
"It's a Five way match, to qualify for a Four way match."
[APB sighs.]
"So it's a Five Way qualifier."
[It's the staffers turn to sigh.]
"No, it's a Qualifier FOR the Four way match."
[APB frowns.]
"Right. It's a Five Way Qualifier for the Four Way match."
[The Staffer smiles.]
"There you go, BINGO you got it."
[APB walks off.]
"Why the fuck didn't they just say that. Christ, what monkey wrote that card?"
[We're backstage at a PURE Wrestling sponsored House Show. Inconsequential in the long run. The Stars of the promotion facing off against random scrubs who don't even deserve contracts just yet. Kids who want nothing more than to prove they can move up to the roster. APB envies them. He envies the enthusiasm of youth. The hopes, the dreams, the all around optimism. APB doesn't have that. He stands at his 'Spot'. And waits for his cue. The match currently in the ring ends, the lights in the Bingo Hall go out and SLIP TO THE VOID begins playing. APB steps out from the shadows and enters the stands. He comes out amongst the fans. Not using the entrance way, he's out with the people. A dim spotlight highlights him. APB stands with the fans, then pulls a microphone out of his leather jacket.]
"Pure TV I face a challenge. Five warriors enter the ring with one goal in mind. Four people will have their hopes and dreams crushed. Four people will go home to eat a meal of disappointment garnished with the spices of failure and defeat. "
[APB looks around him.]
"That's not going to be me. I'm going to be the one standing tall at the end. I'm going to be the one who wins. I'm going to move on and go forward. For those who know me, they've seen in the past, I don't care for everything that comes with being a champion. I don't care for the drama. I don't care for the spotlight. But you want to know a little secret?"
[APB pauses to collect himself.]
"Right now. Right here, surrounded by a new, fresh, crowd. An audience full of hope. An audience who hasn't yet been told who will rise and who will sink. A crowd full of that same optimism. I am ready. I'm ready to step up. I'm ready to put myself out there. I'm ready to not just be a Cog in the Machine. The last place I worked at, I was given the role of being the Guardian. When you came in new, and beat me. That's when your contract started. I was the guy who stood in the doorway and was the final test in the application process.
It was a fun gig, but this time? This time I want more. This time I want to stand at the top of the mountain. This time I want to be more than just the Guardian. This time I want to be the example."
[Once more APB looks out at the crowd.]
"And that All starts with knocking down the Four and standing at the top of the Five."
[APB holds the microphone up.]
"That all starts with winning on Monday."
[APB poses with the fans as his music begins to play. As the lights dim, he heads back to the back.]
I won't be a cog in the machine. I'll be THE MACHINE.
