I've gone toe to toe with the Number 23. A genetic freak controlled by a mad scientist. I've faced off with psychopaths who've directed their anger not towards me, but towards my family. I've fought groups of rampaging invaders hell bent on shutting down whatever promotion I'm in down.
So, yeah. I guess I can agree with the byline in the advertisement for this weeks match. Only one difference this time around.
It's tough to be afraid of the monsters in the dark, when you've given up fear.
"Is this thing on?"
[Static. Black and White. Shaky camera work. After a few moments, the camera focuses in on APB. The scene is outside. It's night and we're in a dark alleyway. APB is dressed in street clothes, and he looks like he hasn't slept in a few days.]
"Excuse me if I'm not scared Mr. Smith, but you see, I've been here before."
[APB takes a deep breath.]
"I've fought bigger men. I've fought crazier men, I've fought more men. And I'll let you in on one little secret."
[The camera gets closer.]
"I don't always win."
[APB chuckles and backs from the camera. He waves his hands around.]
"Stop the presses. A wrestler has broken the cardinal rule. I've admired that I lose sometimes. Let's finish this thing up before the quacks from the loony bin show up and drag me off."
[APB stops.]
"Sorry, losing it. Little sleep, anxiety over getting a win and proving my worth. All that jazz. Anywhooo....."
[APB calms down he straightens out his clothes.]
"Look, Deacon..... hey, can I call you Deac?... Either way, listen, We've a match this week. I expect you to bring your all, I'll bring my all and in the end one of us will lie broken and beaten in the middle of the ring. We don't need all this fancy tweeting and facebookin and all that extraneous stupid crap that seems to be taken over. We've just got a ring and two guys who want a win."
[APB sighs.]
"Did I cover everything? Yeah, I think so."
[Abruptly APB just walks away. The camera fades out.]
Christ. I don't know. I just don't think I can cut it anymore. The Monsters get less and less frightening, but I get less and less resilient. Can I overcome this time?
Honestly.
Honestly this time I just don't know. This will be more of a test than I'm letting on, but damn if I'm going to let anybody know that. The only real thing to do is to just fight. Fight and survive.
